How High Are My Risks For Getting Diabetes?
If diabetes runs in your family then you may wonder, "How high are my risks for getting diabetes?" It is a good question to ponder.
The truth is, diabetes is known to be a hereditary disease. This means, if members of your family are diabetic, then there is a greater chance that you, too, will also become diabetic.
There are three things you can do to help minimize your chance of developing diabetes:
Exercise
Regular exercise will do wonders for you, regardless if you are at risk for diabetes. Try to get at least 20 minutes of exercise, four days a week. Take the stairs instead of the elevator to get to work. Pass over the spot right in front of the grocery store and park farther away, forcing yourself to walk a bit further than you normally would.
Eat a Healthy Diet
Plan meals that are well-balanced and include a lot of protein, fresh fruits, and fresh vegetables. When you get hungry in between meals, reach for an apple or orange instead of a cookie.
Maintain your Weight
Obesity is a big factor when it comes to developing diabetes. Watch your weight and keep it in the ideal range for your height.
These are things we should all be doing anyway, but it is especially important for people who are have a hereditary risk of getting diabetes.
